The enteric division of the ANS consists of the neural plexuses that are contained within the walls of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon (Fig. 8). These plexuses within the gastrointestinal system are indispensable in the control of gastrointestinal motility, secretion, and transport. They form a complex nervous system that is capable of functioning independently of any extrinsic neural input from the sympathetic or parasympathetic divisions. Most, if not all, of the transmitters found in the brain are also found within neurons of the enteric system. The neuronal mechanisms and neural circuits that form the plexuses are capable of high-level information processing and receive sensory information directly from sensory receptors located within the gastrointestinal tract.
