In many cases, it is not possible to monitor the electrical activity of nerve cells using intracellular microelectrode recording techniques; however, it is possible to measure a reflection of that intracellular activity from the immediate extracellular environment of excitable cells. Typical examples of this type of recording are the electromyogram (EMG), electrocardiogram (ECG), electrooculogram (EOG), and electroencephalogram (EEC). Each of these recordings reflects the intracellular activity from a host of simultaneously excited cells.
