This chapter examines two commonly encountered clinical disorders in an attempt to illustrate how the cardiovascular system is governed by underlying physiological principles. The first example is heart failure, where the ability of the heart to pump blood is compromised. The second example is circulatory shock, where cardiac output is inadequate to meet the needs of the body. These two examples are often interrelated, as the first can cause the second; hence, both are discussed within a single chapter.
