Abortions in Goats Due to Infectious Agents

The most common causes of infectious abortions are Toxoplasma, Chlamydia, Salmonella, Brucella melitensis, Listeria, Leptospira, and Coxiella. Transmission is mainly through ingestion of the microorganisms or oocysts through feed and water, inhalation, conjunctiva, skin, and mucosal abrasions. Q-fever caused by Coxiella burnetti can be spread through tick bites. Most of the abortions are midterm to late term.[10] Methods for preventing and controlling infectious abortions in goats are summarized in Table 1.
