Beneficial Behaviors Of Swine

Swine have behavioral repertoires that are rich and diverse. Some behaviors can be classified as beneficial, for example, nest building prior to farrowing and suckling of piglets by the lactating sow. Other behaviors can become problematic for individual or groups of pigs, which may even cause challenges for caretaker management. Normal and beneficial behaviors include feeding, drinking, eliminating, and resting behaviors. These behaviors, also called maintenance behaviors, are expressed by normal pigs at a certain predictable and repeatable level, depending on pig genetics and the microenvironment that is provided to the pigs.
