Despite years of intensive artificial selection, which have considerably changed aspects of their morphology and behavior compared to the wild turkey, the domestic turkey is an intelligent, social animal that displays a wide range of behavior and has both psychological and physiological needs. Intensive commercial rearing conflicts with many of these needs and as a consequence, there are many compromises of welfare. Future research should include alleviation of these compromises as a priority.
