Nonconventional energy feedstuffs are often an economical source of energy, and in many instances can also be a significant source of protein and other important nutrients for livestock and poultry rations. In the future, the variety and quantity of by-products and edible wastes are expected to increase, while disposal options for many of these wastes, such as landfills, will become more limited and costly. Thus, the role of livestock and poultry in recycling and adding value to many of these by-products and wastes will become increasingly important not only to decrease feed costs but also as a viable waste management option.
