The chemical and physical body composition of growing animals is ultimately determined by the animal's genotype. However, body composition can be manipulated substantially by altering feeding level and diet composition. This applies in particular to the body lipid to body protein ratio, which is closely related to the fat tissue to muscle tissue ratio. Diet manipulation also represents a means to influence the fatty acid profile of body lipid and the content of some vitamins and minerals in the animal's body.
