Fig. 1 depicts a meiotic event where the animal is typed for two different markers (A and B loci). The paternally derived chromosome contained alleles A1 and B1 and the maternally derived chromosome contained alleles A2 and B2. Based on the genotypes of the gametes (offspring), it is determined that the A and B loci are 20 cM apart.

Numerous types of genetic markers exist. The first used were phenotypes such as coat color or pattern, eye color, etc. The first biochemical markers relied upon protein polymorphisms or erythrocyte antigen markers. Then DNA-based markers were developed, such as restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP), microsatellite markers, and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP).
