Hypothalamus

The hypothalamus is a region of the brain that produces hormones released by the posterior pituitary gland and releasing peptides that regulate the anterior pituitary gland. There are five hypothalamic-releasing hormones. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH, LHRH, FSHRH) stimulates secretion of luteotropin (luteinizing hormone, LH) and follitropin (follicle-stimulating hormone, FSH). Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRF) stimulates proopiomelanocortin (POMC) gene expression, and thus, corticotropin (adrenocorticotropic hormone, ACTH) secretion. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulates thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH) secretion. Secretion of growth hormone is controlled by the stimulatory action of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GRH) and the inhibitory action of somatostatin (SRIH).
