The transport containers are removed from the trucks and the birds are unloaded onto a conveyor belt. From the conveyor belt, the birds are manually hung by the feet on high-speed shackle lines at the rate of approximately 140 to 180 birds per minute. Hanging is done in a low-light environment (to calm the birds) and care is exercised to reduce bird injury.

Almost immediately, the birds are electrically stunned to induce unconsciousness, reduce physical activity, and ensure humane slaughter. Gas stunning is also being used in some areas of the United States and in Europe. The neck is cut and the unconscious birds are allowed to bleed for approximately 90 seconds.
