Introduction

Genomics is the science involving the study of the nucleotide sequence and organization of an organism's DNA in its entirety, otherwise known as its genome. A useful analogy of genomics is that of looking at an entire forest, rather than at individual trees. Genomics is more a thought process than a science and truly came to fruition when high throughput genetic technologies and powerful computer algorithms were developed. Typically, genomic approaches assume that nothing about the genome is known a priori and hence require the results of previous experiments to drive the direction of future genetic research.
