Introduction

Horse breeding today is a relatively intensely managed equine activity. Breeding is conducted primarily through hand-mating or artificial insemination (AI) programs. Even amateur horse owners need to know basic physiology related to the estrous cycle of the mare to optimize chances for conception. The goals of this article are to:

1) present the fundamental concepts for management of the stallion and mare for successful breeding; and

2) give a brief overview of management practices related to foaling.

Horses have long been perceived to have lower reproductive efficiency than other domestic livestock. It is apparent that mismanagement rather than inherently low fertility may be the cause of poor reproductive performance. The mare's long gestation 340 days) requires almost immediate rebreeding if annual foal production is the goal. Given this parameter, poor management and breeding techniques and unforeseen health problems can very quickly decrease reproductive efficiency.
