Currently, two widely used goat nutrition management recommendations are those of the National Research Council (NRC) and the Agriculture and Food Research Council (AFRC). However, those recommendations were, in most instances, obtained by averaging determinations from a relatively small number of reports or extrapolated from experimentation with other ruminant species. Hence, recently a large database of treatment mean observations from available goat feeding and nutrition reports in the literature was constructed and used to develop equations for prediction of energy and protein requirements by regression analyses. This work is described in a special issue of the journal, Small Ruminant Research (Volume 53, Number 3), published by Elsevier Science, and some findings are highlighted here.
