The Nubian breed is of North African origin. The more common type referred to as the Anglo Nubian had its origin in Great Britain when domestic does of Swiss origin were mated to bucks imported from Africa and India. Through selective breeding, the modern Anglo Nubian was produced. The Nubian looks different from all other breeds, having short, sleek hair, long drooping ears, and a Roman nose. The Nubian does not give as much milk (average 660 kg/yr; Table 1) as the Swiss breeds; however, it produces milk with the highest butterfat content. It tends to be meatier than the Swiss breeds. Colors vary and include a uniquely spotted type similar to the Appaloosa horse.[3]
