Protein Sources

Many protein sources can be used for food animal production. (See Table 1 for the world production of major protein meals in recent years.[1,2]) They have, however, different feeding values because of a multitude of factors.[3] The composition of selected protein sources is presented in Tables 2 and 3. Although protein supplements are defined as those feedstuffs containing 20% or more crude protein (CP),[4] some with less CP are included. For complete information on the composition, readers are referred to National Research Council (NRC) and other publications.1-5-9-1 Similarly, more detailed information on major protein sources has been presented recently,[3] and there are excellent reviews on protein supplements.1-4'10'11-1
