The degree to which sediment is detached and transported by runoff is strongly correlated with obstructions on the soil surface that reduce the kinetic energy of runoff by diverting, and thereby slowing, overland flow. Litter and substantial obstructions such as the bunchgrass growth form are strongly correlated with reduced ability to transport sediment. Runoff and the associated erosive energy can also be reduced by maintaining/enhancing the rate of water movement into the soil through grazing practices that maintain cover and enhance soil structure.
