Receptors in the circulation

Receptors are important to know about in order to understand how inotropes work. There are four main types of receptor in the circulation (Table 6.2).

All adrenoreceptors act via G proteins and cyclic AMP at the cellular level. Down-regulation of coronary pi adrenoreceptors occurs in patients who are on long-term p blockers or who have chronic cardiac failure because of prolonged excess endogenous catecholamine release. Down-regulation also occurs with prolonged exogenous catecholamine administration.
