Benefits

In contrast to palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis (see below), there is little evidence on the efficacy of iontophoresis in axillary hyperhidrosis. Akins et a/.13 reported eight of 27 sites in 22 patients with focal hyperhidrosis treated with iontophoresis. Iontophoresis was not effective in two of the eight axillae. Three of eight axillae (37-5%) showed a 50% decrease in sweating after 2 weeks, as measured by the starch iodine test. In another case series, Holzle et al14 reported an excellent or moderate reduction in one of five patients with axillary sweating.
