In a retrospective study of the long-term efficacy and side-effects in 270 patients with a total of 480 T1-T4 sympathectomies, Herbst et al.3 reported results in 39 patients with axillary hyperhidrosis. After surgery 30 (77%) reported immediate success. However, after a mean follow up of 14-6 years, only 13 patients (33%) with axillary hyperhidrosis remained completely satisfied, i n contrast to 167 (73-2 % ) with palmar hyperhidrosis (see comment below under Harms).
