The Ehlers et al. study40 was clearly reported and although no ITT analysis was performed, dropouts were low (9 out of 113 at 3 months). However, over 14 outcome measures were reported, which introduces the possibility of multiple hypothesis testing. The authors also performed statistical comparisons against a non-randomised control group, which may not be justified. Nevertheless, the magnitude of improvement for those receiving behavioural techniques in addition to their standard dermatological care (which included topical corticosteroids) was moderately large, and carried more weight than the other two studies38,39
because assessments were made by an investigator blinded to the treatment allocation.
