In these trials, two of the 21 patients had increased triglyceride and/or creatinine levels (both received 3 mg/kg/day). In long-term treatment for psoriasis (more than 6 months) 6-18% of patients interrupted the treatment because of side-effects. The most serious side-effects were high blood pressure, renal toxicity and a potential increase in the risk of cancer.18 High blood pressure was reported in 5-26% of patients in short-term trials. Renal toxicity from ciclosporin is attributed to a vasoconstrictor effect on kidney arteries.18 Acute renal side-effects improve after withdrawal of treatment. However, renal impairment from long-term treatment could be irreversible.
