This section deals with house dust mite eradication for cases of established atopic eczema. No systematic review was found for house dust mite reduction. Six RCTs1-6 evaluating the role of house dust mite reduction in the treatment of established atopic eczema were identified and are summarised in Table 17.4. In general, the evidence to support the efficacy of house dust mite eradication for the treatment of atopic eczema is of poor quality. Interventions such as vacuuming and the use of synthetic mattress covers appear to be most effective in reducing the house dust mite load, but how this impacts on disease severity is still unclear.
