Mycetoma is an uncommon infection and there are no community-based data on prevalence. Information on worldwide incidence is based on an old study conducted by postal questionnaire in which interested departments (133) submitted data on numbers of cases occurring between 1940 and 1960. The results were published in 19632 and indicate that certain countries such as Sudan and Mexico had the highest numbers of cases. However, some countries such as India where the disease is endemic, did not participate; so the data are only partially complete.
