There are few studies showing the prevalence of melasma. A study done in Mexico2 and another done in Peru3 found that melasma accounted for 4-10% of new dermatology hospital referrals. Melasma was found to be the third most common pigmentary disorder of the skin in a survey of 2000 black people at a private clinic in Washington DC.4 Melasma is thought to be more common in people of Hispanic origin who live in areas of high ultraviolet-light exposure and in Asian people.5
