Key points

• The current review does not claim to be comprehensive and in particular has not considered commonly used topical agents including anthralin (dithranol), tar and topical corticosteroids, nor all variants of psoriasis (for example nail psoriasis, scalp psoriasis, generalised pustular psoriasis).

• Many psoriasis trials are too small and of too short a duration to be able to draw robust conclusions. Few trials record patients' own evaluations of treatment efficacy and tolerability. There is, however, a considerable amount of information to help guide practice.
