Investigations of patients with nipple retraction include mammography and, if appropriate, ultrasonography to determine if there is an underlying tumour present. However, in the absence of malignancy, and in the majority ofwomen, reassurance only is required. In young women and in those seeking cosmesis, surgical correction with eversion of the nipple may be carried out. However, this may cause damage to the underlying ducts and can interfere with attempts at breast feeding subsequently.
