Leadership in Public Arenas

From the 1920s until 1991 the Soviet government sought to ensure that women would be included in government, with some filling prominent positions, and the independent government of Uzbekistan has continued this practice. Thus, while men occupy most positions in local, regional, and statewide government, a small percentage of farm, mahalla, and district leaders are women. The parliament typically has 5-15% women members. There is a vice-president for women's affairs, and several cabinet members are women. Women often become leaders in professions that they dominate, such as medicine and education, but male leadership is expected in most areas of public life.
