Relative Status of Men and Women

There were no formal rules regarding the relative value attached to men and women by Shoshone society. Since the social organization of the Shoshone included no positions of official authority, what status differences existed by gender were largely a function of individual personality. Since game was sparse in the Shoshone environment, no special status advantage was gained by men from their hunting. The organizers of communal rabbit hunts were usually, but not necessarily, men, and the shaman who played the most prominent role (of magically attracting the antelope into the antelope corral) during antelope drives might as readily be a woman as a man.
