Investigations into the bowel pathology are many and will depend on the symptoms that the patient is experiencing. In outpatients they will include:
• history taking
• abdominal examination
• digital rectal examination
• rigid sigmoidoscopy
• haematology, including a full blood count (FBC):
- erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
- C-reactive protein (CRP)
- white blood cell count (WBC)
• carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) to check concomitant cancers.
