The liver has the ability to regenerate itself if needed. The liver supplies various chemical substances to the body via the blood supply through the hepatic vein. Waste is secreted via the hepatic ducts that form part of the common bile duct. The liver acts as a storage area for vitamins A, D and B12. Harmful and poisonous substances absorbed by the intestines are stopped from circulating in the blood supply by the liver.

The liver produces about 1 litre of bile every day; it is stored in the gallbladder and enters the duodenum via the bile duct.
