The Extraperitoneal Paravesical Pelvic Spaces

Catherine Roy, M.D.

Spread and localization of fluid collections in the extraperitoneal paravesical pelvic spaces may arise from many causes and from a variety of sites. Disease states and interventional procedures include coagulation defects, abscesses of the pelvic organs, pelvic or inguinal surgery, and trauma. Extrapelvic sites of origin include the extraperitoneal region of the abdomen, groin, and rectus sheath. An understanding of these spaces supports the clinical identification of the extension and characteristic configuration of fluid collections in the pelvis.
