All hospitalized patients with suspected tuberculosis must be placed in respiratory isolation until the diagnosis is certain. 13 Admission is important in cases where the social situation makes it difficult to obtain a proper diagnosis and for therapy to be instituted. When a patient is proven to have active MDR TB, hospital admission is also indicated to institute therapy and observe for drug toxicity. Other indications for admission include uncertain diagnosis or patient noncompliance. Physicians need to be aware of their own state laws regarding involuntary hospitalization and treatment. 19
