Infants under 1 year of age pose a more difficult problem because of the risk of rapid dehydration and hypoglycemia. Signs of sepsis in this age group may be nonspecific, but any infant who fails to make eye contact or to respond to a parent's voice or face may be toxic and will likely be admitted to the hospital. Although bilious vomiting may develop in older infants and children who acquire viral gastroenteritis, bilious vomiting in an infant under 2 years of age is a sign of intestinal obstruction until proven otherwise.
