The forces that lead to cervical spine injury have been studied in laboratory settings. These experiments have revealed that specific patterns of injury are associated with the initial dominant force present at the time of injury. A classification system for describing cervical spine injuries based on the biomechanical force responsible for the injury has been proposed by Harris Iablei261-3. A description of selected cervical spine fractures based on this classification follows.
