Antithrombin Iii Atiii

Antithrombin III is a serum protein that has inhibitory effects on coagulation factors, activated factor II (thrombin), as well as activated factors IX, X, XI, and XII. Deficiency of ATIII can be congenital or acquired. Replacement ATIII is available in two preparations obtained by heparin-affinity chromatography. The products undergo viral inactivation for 10 h at 60°C, which inactivates HIV-1. There are ever-expanding uses for ATIII replacement, but currently its main use is for patients with hereditary deficiency of ATIII with acute thromboembolism or the prophylaxis of thrombosis in these patients. It is also being used experimentally for the prevention of thrombosis in surgical patients, for obstetric emergencies, and for shock and DIC.
