Unfortunately, symptoms may be nonspecific, and the latency period between exposure and symptom appearance may be years. Symptoms can be acute or chronic, specific or vague. Parasitic disease can present with relatively common complaints, such as headache, fever, cough, and malaise, or with acute, life-threatening complications, such as seizures, hemoptysis, melena, and intestinal obstruction. A differential diagnosis can be attempted on the basis of history and knowledge of typical symptoms associated with various parasitic agents (Table 143-2).
