Clinical Features

Depending on whether the disease presents as a cyst or a sinus, the patient generally complains of swelling, pain, or a persistent discharge. When abscess formation occurs, the patient complains of a tender mass. Although there may be more than one sinus with several tiny openings in the midline of the intergluateal cleft, the most common finding is that of a single opening from which hair is protruding. Patients usually present to the ED when an abscess has formed that can no longer drain.
