Complications Of Delivery Cord Prolapse

In the event that the bimanual examination reveals a palpable, pulsating cord, the examiner's hand should not be removed, but rather should be used to elevate the presenting fetal part to reduce compression of the cord.8 Immediate obstetric assistance is then necessary, as a cesarean section is indicated. The examiner's hand should remain in the vagina while the patient is transported and prepped for surgery in order to prevent further compression of the cord by the fetal head. 9 No attempt should ever be made to replace a prolapsed cord.
