Diagnosis

The diagnosis of breast abscesses should be considered in all patients who present with painful breast mass, particularly inflammatory conditions. Some recommend ultrasonographic assessment of suspected breast abscess as not all women have an obvious collection of focal pus. 11 Alternatively, as long as carcinoma is not suspected, aspiration for diagnosis can be attempted. A negative aspiration does not exclude the diagnosis of abscess. The technique of aspiration is the same as for suspected abscess at other near-surface body sites.
