Mild to moderate barbiturate intoxication responds well to general supportive care and MDAC. Frequent reassessment of neurologic status and vital sign parameters indicating improvement over 6 to 8 h allow eventual patient transfer to psychiatric services. Severe overdose with previously described historical and clinical features will require admission, ongoing medical stabilization, and psychiatric intervention. Early poison center contact and specialty service consultation is recommended.
