For all the foregoing reasons, elderly patients in EDs are more likely to require hospital admission for their illness or injury compared with younger patients. When discharged from an ED, elderly patients may not fully understand the instructions, may not be able to obtain and take prescribed medications, may not be able to access appropriate follow-up, or may not be able to care for their personal needs during the period of illness. An elderly patient's family, friends, and social support system should be informed and involved before the patient leaves the ED.
