Whenever pregnancy is diagnosed in the emergency department, timely access to prenatal care should be arranged. Recommendations for prenatal care for a normal pregnancy include an initial obstetric evaluation no later than 6 to 8 weeks' gestation. Management plans need to be made in view of the condition. Discharge instructions should include recommendations about symptoms and signs for which the patient should be urgently reevaluated ( Table.99-4). Recommendations on activities, lifestyle, and appropriate use of prescription and over-the-counter medications should be given.
