Usually, treatment for panic disorder can be initiated in an outpatient setting. If a patient is already being treated for panic disorder, consult with the treating physician before initiating or changing medication. Psychiatric consultation in the emergency department is an option, if consultation is available. The patient should be referred to his or her primary care physician or a psychiatrist for follow-up care.

Patients who are suicidal or who are so incapacitated that they are unable to care for themselves require psychiatric hospitalization. In such cases, a psychiatric evaluation is necessary to determine the extent of dangerousness and need for inpatient treatment.
