Patients whose overall medical condition does not warrant surgery or admission to the hospital can be discharged safely with routine wound-care instructions. If their injury resulted from a major blunt impact, a companion should be instructed to bring the patient back for altered level of consciousness, nausea or vomiting, or persistent bleeding or headache. Removal of scalp sutures or staples should take place in 10 to 14 days, while nonabsorbable sutures in the face should be removed in 3 to 5 days.
