Because most SCDs occur suddenly and without warning, the victim cannot activate the emergency response system prior to collapse. Bystanders who witness the event can improve a victim's chances for survival significantly by alerting the emergency response system promptly. All too often, the untrained citizen only further delays treatment by attempting to inform relatives, call the neighbors, or contact the patient's personal physician instead of calling the local community emergency telephone number (in most places, it is 911).
