Emergency Department Treatment

The goal of treatment is to reduce pain and initiate restoration of motion and function. In the emergency department, this treatment consists of administering analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents and instructing the patient in the proper use of heat and ice to reduce discomfort. The patient should be instructed in general progressive range-of-motion exercises, such as pendulum swings and walking the fingers up the wall using the affected arm. A sling may be provided for comfort, but its long-term use should be discouraged to prevent further loss of motion.
