Epidemiology

Each year in the United States, nearly 1.4 million patients present to the ED with hand and finger symptoms. A recent series of 1000 consecutive hand problems indicated that 42 percent had lacerations, 27 percent had contusions, 17 percent had fractures, and 5 percent had infections. Two-thirds of presenters were male and one-third were under 18 years old; one-third of the injuries occurred at home. The most common mechanism was blunt trauma (50 percent) followed by sharp object (25 percent).
