Injuries to the genitourinary system occur in about 2 to 5 percent of adult trauma victims. The vast majority of these injuries are due to blunt trauma. Accurate overall estimates for children are not available, but it appears that about 10 percent of pediatric patients with blunt abdominal trauma have renal system injury. 12 More than 80 perecnt of those with injuries to the kidney have other concurrent injuries, about a third of them life threatening. Approximately 80 percent of the urogenital injuries involve the kidney, and about 10 percent involve the bladder. Significant ureteral injuries are relatively rare and are usually associated with penetrating trauma. Significant urethral injuries most often occur in males and are usually associated with pelvic fracture. Patients with anatomic anomalies, including tumor and hydronephrosis, appear more susceptible to injury.
