Although a battered woman may choose to return to the battering relationship at the end of the physician-patient encounter, important therapeutic interventions can help her begin the process of extricating herself and her children from the violence:
• She needs to know that she is not alone,
• She needs to know that there is help available for her and,
• She does not deserve to be beaten.
All battered women should be referred to hospital-based or community-based domestic violence experts, such as social workers or domestic violence advocates, for further evaluation and continuing intervention.
